SouthMed WiA partners and stakeholders meeting in Casablanca

On July 11th and 12th, 2019 over 50 participants from around the Mediterranean joined the Final Regional Event of the ‘SouthMed WiA – Towards greater gender equality: Promoting the role and image of women in the Southern Mediterranean audiovisual sector’ project, implemented by a consortium of European and southern Mediterranean organisations, led by Interarts, and co-funded by the European Union under the Med Film regional programme.

The 2-day event, hosted by the Instituto Cervantes of Casablanca, was a great opportunity for all those involved in the SouthMed WiA project to meet and exchange on the objectives, results and outputs achieved. The event consisted of two panel discussions, dedicated to ‘’Gender equality in the audiovisual sector in the Southern Mediterranean: a pending issue for the profession’’ and ‘’Opportunities for professional cooperation and development with and by women’’, each followed by two working groups.

The event concentrated on the role of women in the audiovisual sector in the Mediterranean and on the importance of addressing the inequalities and challenges that they are confronted with. The event also offered the opportunity to launch the SouthMed WiA network of women professionals in the audiovisual sector and the ‘Recto/Verso’ documentary.

SouthMed WiA has been a pioneering project promoting and raising awareness on gender equality in the Southern Mediterranean audiovisual sector. We hope that it will inspire and encourage more actions and projects in the future to multiply efforts and truly contribute to building more gender-equal societies in the Mediterranean and beyond.
