The SouthMed WiA network at the regional conference “Towards Gender Equality in the Audiovisual Industry in the Maghreb-Mashreq Region”

On September 21stCOPEAM (Permanent Conference of the Mediterranean Audiovisual Operators) and EWA (European Women in Audiovisual Network), both partners of the SouthMed WiA project, were invited to the closing event of the UNESCO Maghreb project “Strengthening a Gender-Sensitive Film Sector in the Maghreb-Mashreq Region” – also co-funded by the UE regional programme MedFilm – which was organized in Rabat (Morocco), on the occasion of the 13th edition of the International Women Film Festival of Salé.

During the panel “Networking: a tool to reinforce the place and image of women in the audiovisual industry. Indicators and Modalities”, the two representatives of SouthMed WiA had the opportunity to present the WiA network (Women in Audiovisual) as an example of sharing experiences and mutual support among women of the audiovisual industry in the MENA region. The main objective was to explore possible synergies with the main results of the UNESCO project, notably the Arab Women in Films catalogue, as well as any initiative aimed at capitalizing and perpetuating these achievements, also through new funding by the European Union.

Ms. Ilhem Hamrouni from the Tunisian Federation of Film Clubs was also invited as a member of the WiA network to the conference, where she proposed the possibility to organize an ad-hoc round table in Hammamet next October, in the framework of the women’s film festival Biouyounihin.
